TRAINING OPPORTUNITY FOR GRENADIAN CONTRATORS
Tuesday, February 06, 2007
Category: Hurricane Resilient Home

Critical to achieving such standards is the application of the Grenada Building Guidelines. On Saturday February 10th and Saturday February 17th, local contractors will have a unique opportunity to study the use and application of the Grenada Building Guidelines.

This training is part the Grenada Hurricane Resilient Home Reconstruction Programme G-(HR²), which is designed to integrate natural hazard resistant building practices and procedures into residential design and construction through the application of a Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) Mechanism.

The sessions, which take place at the Grenada Grand Beach Resort Convention Centre, will be facilitated by Roger Baptiste and Carlyle Glean Jr. two local engineers; and Grenville Phillips of Consulting Engineers Partnership (CEP) in Barbados.

Contractors who have not registered can do so by calling the OAS Office in Grenada at 440-2439. Registration is on a first–come-first-serve basis.

The Grenada Building Guidelines apply to houses with a gross floor area of 2,500 square feet or less and a height of two storeys or less.

Previous training sessions under the CQA Project include workshops for engineers and architects in December; and Building Inspectors in January. Also in January, a Symposium was convened for engineers and architects that produced an outline for the first draft of a ‘Checking Manual’ for the examination of residential plans and inspection of residential construction.

The implementation phase of the G-(HR²) Programme, the CQA Project, is funded by the Organisation of American States (OAS) and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA); and is being executed by the OAS in collaboration with the Agency for Reconstruction and Development (ARD).

The CQA Project Work Plan was developed by OAS Consultant Terrence Smith; in collaboration with an Advisory Group comprised of representatives of the following:

  • OAS,
  • ARD,
