Building Inspectors from the Physical Planning Unit (PPU) of the
Ministry of Finance, the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) and the
Housing Authority of Grenada (HAG), as well as Engineering Assistants
from the National Water and Sewerage Authority, are enrolled in the
intensive five-day training session currently underway at the
Flamboyant Hotel.
Two local engineers, Roger Baptiste and Carlyle Glean Jr., and
Grenville Phillips of Consulting Engineers Partnership (CEP) in
Barbados, are conducting the workshop.
This workshop is the second in a series for persons working within
the construction sector, in an effort to integrate natural hazard
resistant building practices and procedures into residential design and
construction, through the application of the Construction Quality
Assurance (CQA) Mechanism. The first workshop took place in December,
2006 for engineers. Future workshops are planned for contractors,
drafts persons and trades persons.
Training, along with Institutional Development and Public Education,
are part of the CQA Project for which the detailed Work Plan was
developed by OAS Consultant Terrence Smith; in collaboration with an
Advisory Group comprised of representatives from the OAS, ARD, PPU,
NIS, HAG, Bankers’ Association of Grenada, Grenada Co-operative League
Ltd., Ministry of Communications, Works and Transport, Ministry of
Social Development, Ministry of Health and the Environment, National
Disaster Management Agency, Association of Grenada Insurance Companies,
Grenada Society of Architects, Construction Association of Grenada,
Grenada Chamber of Industry and Commerce and Grenada Institute of
Professional Engineers.
