Mr. Spears facilitated a one day workshop at the Agency for
Reconstruction and Development (ARD) Conference Room on Tuesday, during
which he provided a variety of tested alternatives in construction
methods and materials, waste water recycling and management,
composting, solar energy and other environmentally friendly practices.
The Workshop was organised by the Global Sustainable Energy Islands
Initiative of the Climate Institute in Washington DC, in collaboration
with the ARD.
Mr. Spears outlined how to build the complete ‘earth home’
constructed with compressed earth brick walls, complete with solar oven
and electricity, rain water collection, composting and other natural
systems. These systems have been successfully applied in China, Mexico
and Africa.
The workshop was attended by contractors, electricians, plumbers,
architects, engineers, contractors and representatives from the
Ministry of Communication, Works and Transport, the Ministry of Health
and the Environment, the Housing Authority of Grenada, the Grenada
Bureau of Standards, the Contractors Association of Grenada and the
Grenada Electricity Services Ltd., as well as students from the T.A.
Marryshow Community College.
Mr. David Sinclair, Director of Sinclair Enterprises Ltd. and a
member of the Board of Directors of the Contractors Association of
Grenada, said the Workshop was very useful.
“I am quite excited about what I have learned today, and so are the
other members of our Association who are here. I can see these methods
happening in Grenada,” he said.
Mr. Sinclair said there is plenty of local clay for making
compressed bricks and the utilisation of waterless toilets, recycling
toilet waste into fertilizer and other sanitation systems can be
applied in Grenada.
