A total of 15 enumerators were in the field from June 3 to June 14
conducting interviews in order to update information for the ARD
Housing Database. The 900 names were provided to the ARD by USAID/PADCO
and the Housing Authority of Grenada (HAG) and also include persons who
registered directly at the ARD office.
The Survey requires information about land tenure, the extent of
damage by Hurricane Ivan and/or Hurricane Emily, the type of dwelling,
ownership of the dwelling, access to the property, the gradient of
land, the number of persons living in the house and the occupation of the homeowner.
This exercise will assist in identifying potential sites for some of
the houses to be constructed by the Peoples’ Republic of China (PRC),
as well as in determining eligibility for the House Repair Programme
being administered by the Prime Minister’s Office.
The ARD Housing Database currently contains a total of 1,700
households with outstanding reconstruction needs, including 133 houses
that are beyond repair and must be completely rebuilt.
Earlier this month, ARD personnel and other members of the Human
Settlement Task Force (HSTF), along with officials from the PRC, toured
five potential sites for the construction of some of the houses to be
donated to Grenada by the PRC.
Site visits were conducted on Crown lands at Mt. Gay, and Frequente
in the Parish of St. George, Black Bay in the Parish of St. John,
Diamond in the Parish of St. Mark and Bellevue in the Parish of St.
Andrew. Information gathered included technical details regarding
topography, geological data and the physical layout. A mixture of
housing designs will be incorporated in order to accommodate topography
and access.
