The second in a series of training workshops gets underway on
Tuesday, May 16 at the Flamboyant Hotel. A total of 21 participants
from Government Ministries, statutory bodies and non-governmental
organisations have enrolled in the three day Workshop.
The first in the series on basic counselling skills was conducted in
November 2005 for 13 participants, all of whom are registered in this
second workshop, which is at the intermediate level.
Like the first Workshop, this one is being facilitated by Dr. Adele
Jones, Professor and Acting Head of the UWI Department of Behavioral
Sciences, and UWI Professor Ms. Michele Sogren.
The training takes the form of an “experiential workshop” in which
participants learn about specific theories and techniques used in
counselling, as well as develop skills through practical application and
exercises.
This includes interviewing, communication and needs assessment, as well
as being able to use ‘self’ more consciously and reflectively in the
counselling process.
This series of workshops is part of efforts by the ARD Department of
Social Recovery to enhance counselling services that help to address
psychological and emotional issues within the Grenadian society.
