As it stands now, even though a vehicle is licensed to carry a
maximum weight, there is no legislation to enforce specified weight
limits. To address the situation, in light of the increased traffic
emanating from numerous reconstruction works throughout the State, the
ARD has contracted legal draftsperson Ms. Carla Herbert to prepare the
law and regulations.
Such legislation is a prerequisite for the disbursement of funds
under the next phase of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) funded
Bridges and Roads Improvement Project (BRIP).
The proposed weigh scale legislation, which will provide for stiff
penalties for drivers who exceed specific weight limits, is scheduled
for completion this month.
The draft legislation will be presented to stakeholders, including
the Royal Grenada Police Force, private sector groups and other
interested parties for discussion. Following the consultative process,
the legislation will be forwarded by the ARD for the consideration of
Cabinet with a view to begin enforcement early in 2006.
